Ban on Japanese food in India
MUMBAI –On Tuesday with immediate effect for three months, India suspended food imports from Japan fearing contamination due to radiation leaks from a crippled nuclear plant in the quake-hit nation, according to an Indian government statement.
The statement also said, “Till such time as credible information is available that the radiation hazard has subsided to acceptable limits.” The ban can also be extended.
Also the India had earlier intensified screening of all purchased items from Japan.
Damaged by the massive earthquake and tsunami on March 11, radiation levels around the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant spiked following a new explosion at one reactor and a fire at another.
The government is worried that contaminated imported items could pose serious health risks. However, India’s food imports from Japan run into only a few million dollars.
