Mild Tremors Experienced in Parts of UP

Mild tremors were experienced in parts of Uttar Pradesh last night though no damage to property or casualty was reported, said media reports.

Officials of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that quake, with an intensity of 3 on Richter scale, hit the region at 10.42 pm with its epicenter being the Baghpat-Meerut, reports said.

“The quake measured 3.0 on Richter scale. The intensity was very low so no effect was experienced in the national capital as such,” an IMD official was quoted as saying.

The official said that damage to property or life was reported, said reports.

Some unconfirmed reports suggested that the tremors were also experienced in the national capital.

Delhi, which is located in zone IV of seismic activity, is in a high danger zone.

“The Gangetic plains are located at plate boundary between Eurasian and Indian plates. This is a continuous process happening for the last 50 million years,” the official was quoted as saying.

“There is no system to predict future earthquakes,” he was quoted as saying.

According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), in 2000-09, earthquakes accounted for nearly 60 percent of deaths by disasters.
