Mayapuri Radiation Victim Dies of Multiple Organ Failure at AIIMS

A 35-year-old man who has been exposed to radioactive material in the scrap market of Mayapuri in west Delhi 19 days ago, has died at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), said media reports citing doctors.

According to reports, Rajendra Prasad died around 9.30 pm on Monday after multiple organ failure. He was exposed to Cobalt 60 at a scrap dealer shop in Mayapuri in west Delhi and admitted to AIIMS on April 8.

“He developed bilateral pneumonia and was exhibiting signs of kidney and liver function impairment. He was put on ventilator April 24,” a doctor treating the radiation victims was quoted as saying.

Doctors said that Ram Kalap, another radiation victim, is critical and his blood counts reduced significantly and has been put on prophylactic antibiotic and anti-fungal agents, reports said.

It may be mentioned that eight radiation victims have been admitted to hospitals so far.

Six people were admitted at AIIMS with radiation exposure. Of them, one was discharged on April 20.

Doctors said that three patients continue to have low blood count but are ‘stable’, said reports.
