Virginity Test Case: NHRC Asks Factual Report From Govt within 4 Weeks
National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notice to Madhya Pradesh government taking suo motu cognizance of the reports of virginity test of tribal girls. In the notice, commission has asked government for a “factual report” of the incidence within four weeks.
According to a PTI report, the commission issued a notice to Chief Secretary on July 17 in the regard calling for a factual report within four weeks.
The NHRC took cognizance of the incidence on the ground of media reports and said that if found true, it would be serious issue of violation of human rights.
It may be mentioned that the report alleged that 151 girls who participated in a mass wedding conducted by the Madhya Pradesh government at Shahdol on June 26 were forced to undergo virginity tests, the rights panel noted.
