Thousands of Trees Axed down in Raisen District: Sartaj Singh

State Forest Minister Sartaj Singh has said that more than 67,000 tree have been felled in Raisen district, reported IANS.

Speaking in the state assembly, Singh admitted that 67,297 trees were axed down between 2006 to 2009 by those who were powerful and influential, said report.

However, the minister said that there’s no case of any forest mafia being active, but villagers from neighbouring states steal wood from these bordering districts.

He claimed that no fruit garden was grown on forest land taht that the forest department had taken required measures to check illegal slashing of trees, said report.

Efforts are being made to stop illegal felling of trees in Raisen and other districts, including Khandwa, Badwani, Betul, Harda and Khargone, he added.
