Production of potato, onion and garlic to increase in Madhya Pradesh

Bhopal: Constant efforts are underway to increase production of potato, onion and garlic in Madhya Pradesh. At present, potato is produced in 88 thousand hectare in the state with over 18 lakh 17 thousand metric tonne yield. Potato is produced in and around Indore besides Chhindwara, Ujjain, Shajapur, Dewas, Morena, Satna, Rajgarh, Jabalpur, Sagar, Panna, Damoh, Tikamgarh, Chhatarpur, Vidisha, Ratlam and Betul districts.
Similarly, over 57 thousand metric tonnes of garlic is produced in about 5400 hectare. Ujjain, Mandsaur, Neemuch, Ratlam, Dewas, Indore, Dhar and Barwani districts are pioneer in garlic production in the state. Onion is produced in over 11 thousand hectare with a yield of over 17 lakh metric tonnes. Crops of onion are mainly grown in Indore, Khandwa, Barwani, Ujjain, Mandsaur, Ratlam, Shajapur, Rewa, Satna, Vidisha, Rajgarh, Jabalpur, Sagar and Panna districts.
Constant efforts are being made to boost production of these three significant cash crops. At a national level symposium at Indore on March 9, experts will discuss ways to increase production of these crops, their storage and marketing. Horticulture farmers from all over the state have been invited to the symposium. Successful horticulturists from other states have also been invited to share their experiences.
The State Government has constructed new cold storages for promoting storage and food processing during last 5 years. As a result, storage capacity of 8 lakh 60 thousand metric tonnes is available in the state. The food processing policy has been made more practical with a view to increasing this capacity further.
The Horticulture Department provides maximum subsidy of Rs. 12 thousand 500 upto 2 hectare to farmers for garlic cultivation. Besides, 50 percent subsidy is also provided on implements. The State Government is also giving subsidy on protected farming of horticulture crops, micro irrigation, advanced technology, organic management and crop management.
