Number of medical education institutions increases 3 times in 9 years

Bhopal: Remarkable increase has been registered in medical education infrastructure and facilities during last 9 years in Madhya Pradesh. During the period, number of medical and dental colleges has increased 3 times. Number of medical colleges in the state was 9 during year 2002-03, which has now increased to 27 during year 2012-13. Of these, number of government autonomous medical colleges increased from 5 to 6, government autonomous dental college 1, private medical colleges from 1 to 6 and number private dental colleges has increased from 2 to 14.
Medical college opened in Bundelkhand after 60 years: After 60 years of India’s independence, first medical college was opened at Sagar in Bundelkhand area in year 2009. During last continuous 4 years, admissions are being given on 100 MBBS seats. Bundelkhand Medical College is the first government autonomous medical college opened in notified area of Madhya Pradesh. Earlier, the state had 5 medical colleges including Gandhi Medical College Bhopal, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College, Indore, Gajaraja Medical College Gwalior, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose College Jabalpur and Shyam Shah Medical College Rewa.
Among government dental colleges, Indore’s Autonomous Dental College already existed. During last 9 years, private sector People’s College of Medical Science & Research Centre, Bhopal, Shri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Science, Indore, Index College, Indore and L.N. Medical College and Chirayu Medical College, Bhopal have been opened. Ujjain’s R.D. Gardi Medical College exited before the period of 9 years.
During last 9 years, People’s Dental Academy, People’s College of Dental Science & Research Centre, Rishiraj College of Dental Science & Research Centre, R.K.D.F. Dental College & Research Centre, Mansarovar Dental College and Bhabha Dental College have been opened in Bhopal, Shri Aurobindo Institute of Dental Education and Index Dental College in Indore, Maharana Pratap College of Dentistry and Institute of Dental College & Advanced Studies in Gwalior, Shri Guru Govind Singh College of Dental Science in Burhanpur and Hitkarni Dental College has been opened at Burhanpur. College of Dental Science, Rau and Modern Dental College & Research Centre, Indore existed before year 2003.
First medical university set up at Jabalpur: The first medical university in the state has been set up at Jabalpur. Its vice-chancellor and registrar have been appointed. Land has been selected by Jabalpur collector and building construction will begin soon.
After setting up of university, various courses in medical, dental, nursing and paramedical colleges will be made uniform. Rs. 50 lakh was provisioned in departmental budget for accelerating pace of setting up of university. Finance Department has given consent for creation of 214 posts for commencing the university.
