Indian universities should ensure their place in top 100 universities

Bhopal: Indian universities’ presence in global scenario is very necessary. Indian universities should have a place in top 100 universities in the world. Indian talents should have opportunities to nourish in the country itself. Research should always be continuously promoted. Universities must interact and impart education conducive for local industrial requirements. President Shri Pranab Mukherjee was addressing convocation of Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya at Indore today.

The President said that an Indian university produced a Nobel laureate 80 years ago. There is a vacuum after Dr. C.V. Raman. Nobel laureates like Dr. Amritya Sen, Dr. S. Chandrashekhar and Dr. Hargovind Khurana had graduated form Indian universities, but got awards and recognition while working in foreign universities. Such atmosphere should be created in universities of our countries also. Every university should have dialogue with best universities in the world and their best practices should be replicated in our universities. He said that some faculties of IIM Kolkata, IIT Mumbai and Madras are included in top 50 faculties in the world, but not a single Indian university figures in top 200 universities in the world. Now, we should make concerted efforts to bring Indian universities in top-100 universities of the world.

The President said that universities should promote researches and job-oriented courses as per local industries’ requirements. A large population in Madhya Pradesh resides in villages. Government will have to make efforts to spread higher education upto there. He exhorted today’s degree-holders and medal winners to continue moving ahead in life and work for their country.

Lok Sabha Speaker Smt. Sumitra Mahajan welcomed the President in her capacity as an alumnus of the university. She said that India boasts of best tradition of learning and teaching and the city will emerge as a major education centre in future.

Governor Shri Ram Naresh Yadav said that the university is overwhelmed by presence of the President today and his message. He exhorted students to work for welfare of society.

Chief Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that one’s head automatically bows before President Shri Pranab Mukherjee’s wisdom and political ideals. Shri Chouhan congratulated the university for completing 50 years. He expressed pleasure that number of girls is more among the medal winners today. He said that Indian is an ancient country of traditions and moral values and students should follow these virtues. Remembering Devi Ahilya of Indore, he said that we would brighten her name by following her teachings. He desired the university to live upto global standards and attain international status.

Apart from President’s arrival, attractive entry of researchers and medal winners also became a centre of attraction. The convocation began with National Anthem. University’s vice-chancellor Dr. D.P Singh delivered the welcome address. As per tradition, he administered oath to students for dedicated life. The President gave away gold medals to students and the Governor silver medals.

Ministers Shri Kailash Vijayvargiya and Shri Umashankar Gupta and Indore Mayor Shri Krishna Murari Moghe were also present on the occasion.
