HC Orders Opening of Union Carbide Factory
Bhopal — Arguably the most notorious industrial address in the world, the Union Carbide plant in Bhopal will throw open its gates to visitors next month, exactly 25 years after a lethal gas leak at the facility claimed thousands of lives.
Hearing a petition filed by state advocate general RD Jain, a division bench of MP High Court comprising Justices Arun Mishra and KS Chouhan allowed the state government to open the factory under tight security and surveillance for condolence meetings and public viewing on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of gas tragedy.
The state government had moved the petition following restrictions imposed on opening the factory by the High Court, which is hearing a PIL seeking safe disposal of huge dumps of toxic waste lying in the factory causing pollution in the vicinity of the now defunct unit.
