Congress Council at Bhopal Municpal Corporation
Bhopal — In what is a clear reversal of roles, newly-elected mayor Krishna Gaur will now have to build tandem with a Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) council led by the Congress, which claimed control over the civic body winning 39 of the 70 segments. The Bharatiya Janata Party registered victories on 27 seats while independents found favour from voters in four wards.
Not the easiest of tasks, Gaur inherits the uneasy crown from outgoing mayor Sunil Sood of the Congress, who was often at loose ends while attempting to build an effective symbiosis with the earlier BMC council led by the BJP.
While parties other than the Congress, BJP and the BSP failed to make a substantial impact on the voters or even the results, the presence of independent candidates did alter victory equations in a few wards.
Though, Shahid Ali of the Congress pulled off the biggest win in terms of votes from ward seven and Kailash Mishra ran a lionhearted campaign to overcome a huge challenge posed by independent Nadir Sharif in ward six, but the magical moment of the day belonged to 23-year-old Samar Huzur who scraped past both the BJP and Congress candidates and several tough independent contestants to register a nail-biting 88 vote victory in ward 20.
Several big guns found themselves batting on spinning wickets with the recent delimitation exercise decisively altering the demography of several wards, especially in the old city areas. The predicament ended in electoral losses for some key BJP leaders.
With the stardust still to settle down around the victors, if political discussions – already hovering over the future course of action likely to be adopted by the four independents and possible names of the Congress nominee to head the BMC council – are anything to go by, it will soon be business as usual at Sadar Manzil….
