Chinese Engineers Flee as Balco Chimney Crash Toll Mounts

Continuing to climb higher with each passing hour, the death toll in the Balco chimney collapse in the Korba town of Chhattisgarh has risen dangerously close to 50 on Saturday even as several Chinese nationals were reported to have fled since the accident on Wednesday.

Rescue workers are continuing to sift through the debris in search of more bodies, still feared trapped underneath, in an operation that is expected to last for at least take another two-three days.

The Balco management announced a five lakh rupee compensation to each of the bereaved families.

The Chinese were part of the Shandong Electric Power Construction Corporation (SEPCO), which was responsible for the construction of two 600 MW power plants of 600 MW at the plant.

The under construction 275m high chimney, a part of the power plant, collapsed amid heavy rain and lightning on Wednesday, several bodies, suspected to be trapped under the rubble, are yet to be recovered.
