Light out against corruption on Independence Day

MUMBAI: With parts of the city participating in a ‘lights out’ programme from 8 pm to 9 pm to express solidarity support with the movement of Anna Hazare and his team.

There were also protest marches in parts of the city and suburbs as India Against Corruption (IAC) volunteers took up positions with supporters in tow.

Some supporters went around Vile Parle, urging residents to support the movement, and then held a thali protest near Vile Parle station at 8 pm. Hazare’s supporters banged spoons and wooden sticks on thalis to drive home their point that the movement was alive in suburban Mumbai.

Veena Sanghvi, an activist supporting Hazare in Vile Parle, said they had urged residents to dedicate a few days to fighting for the cause. “We find that most people are ready to fight against corruption and demand more transparency in public life,” she said.

Protests have been organized in most suburban locations, right up to Mulund and Mira Road, said Sanghvi. Madhuli and Poonam Apts, opposite Atria Mall, held a candlelight protest on Monday evening.
