55 litres Drinking Water Per Person in over One Lakh Rural Settlements

Bhopal. The Public Health and Engineering Department is implementing various drinking water schemes for rural areas of Madhya Pradesh. Out of one lakh 27 thousand 552 settlements in rural areas, arrangements have been made to provide 55 litres drinking water every day per person in one lakh 7 thousand 708 settlements. For the remaining 19 thousand 844 settlements, 40 litres of drinking water will be made per person. Efforts are being made to increase the supply to 55 litres in the settlements.

Nearly 2 lakh 11 thousand hand pumps have been set up to provide drinking water in rural settlements of the state in the last 11 years. Similarly, drinking water has been arranged in nearly 53 thousand rural schools. In 6,694 big villages with Nal-Jal scheme in 2005, now 15 thousand 129 schemes have been implemented. In the last 11 years, work of nearly 8,435 Nal Jal Schemes has been completed.

Priority is being given to the implementation of pure drinking water schemes through alternative schemes in a few districts and their settlements where there is problem of excessive fluoride. Pure drinking water has been arranged in nearly 8,406 settlements on the initiative of state government. Work of revival of traditional drinking water sources is also being undertaken. According to the new guiding principles of the Government of India, drinking water supply of 55-litre water per person through hand pump schemes and 70 litres per person through Nal Jal schemes has been fixed. Efforts are being made to make drinking water available to rural populace through maximum domestic water connections.

Closed Nal Jal schemes are being restarted by the gram panchayats under the “Nal se Jal, Aaj aur Kal” campaign. These include those schemes with less than Rs 2 lakh expense. This fund has been made available to the concerned panchayat. Schemes on which more than Rs 2 lakh expense may be incurred will be repaired and restarted by the PHE Department. After maintaining the scheme for two years, they will be transferred in proper condition to the gram panchayats.

Twenty Group Water Supply Schemes are being implemented through the Madhya Pradesh Jal Nigam constituted for the implementation of surface source based large group Nal Jal schemes in 17 districts. Nearly 11 lakh 86 thousand people from 768 villages will reap benefits through the implementation of these schemes.
