SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav has been released after being taken into preventive custody by UP police for leading a Samajwadi Party (SP) demonstration against a huge surge in food prices in Lucknow, say media reports.

Yadav was detained when he was sitting on dharna at city’s main Hazratganj crossing, PTI quoted police as saying.

Needless to mention, SP had called for a protest against price rise in all district headquarters on Tuesday.

Samajwadi Party had called for a protest against price rise at all district headquarters today.

IBNS report said quoting local media that chief minister Mayawati had not granted permission for demonstration.

Mulayam, in the meanwhile, alleged that SP activists were baton-charged during the demonstration, said report.

“It’s not fair to lathicharge people like this. We have not done anything wrong. We have been protesting peacefully. We want an explanation as to why our workers were lathicharged?” Mulayam was quoted as saying.

PTI reported that SP workers started arson and pelted stones at Hazratganj crossing. They clashed with police who prevented them from taking out a march to the district magistrate’s office as part of their protest.
