Waghmare to Continue as Kasab’s Lawyer

Advocate Anjali Waghmare on Wednesday informed a sessions court in Mumbai that se will indeed represent Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone Pakistani terrorist captured alive during the 26/11 carnage in Mumbai, as his lawyer.

Waghmare is to stand as defence counsel for Kasab in the 26/11 trial that is scheduled to commence on April 6.

Though, she was appointed Kasab’s lawyer by the court, some misinterpretation in the media had resulted in a controversy as local residents and some Shiv Sena activists pelted stones outside her Worli Police Camp residence on Monday night.

Waghmare, an alumnus of the prestigious Symbiosis Institute had later sought 24 hours to rethink her decision to defend Kasab.

Responding to a question put forth by Judge M L Tahilyani, Waghmare replied, “Yes, I will continue in the case.”

The court has also appointed lawyer KP Pawar to assist Waghmare in the trial. Both Pawar and Waghmare are a part of the state’s legal aid cell.

Speaking to the media Waghmare said: “As long as the government is providing me adequate security I do not have any problem with appearing. I understand the sensitivity of the case and look forward to a fair and speedy trial.”
