Samajwadi Party activists on Wednesday damaged a rail engine and attempted to torch effigies of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati for her misuse of public funds on memorials, rampant corruption and a dismal law and order situation in the state.
Reports coming in from Bahraich said SP workers on the concluding day of their five-day- state wide protest pelted stones damaging the engine of 132 Bahraich-Gonda passenger train at Dargah crossing before forcing it to a halt.
The driver and his assistant sustained wounds in the incident, window panes were also damaged, said reports.
In Deoria, local police resorted to a baton charge to desist SP workers from torching an effigy of Mayawati at the collectorate compound, seven party workers were injured in the incident.
In Varanasi, the five day stir came to a violent end after police shot water cannons and used force to keep SP ranks from forcing their way into the collectorate premises. Several SP leaders and policemen sustained injuries in the clash.
