Varun Will Not Campaign in Delhi: BJP

BJP has ruled out using Varun Gandhi, the party’s new poster boy for Hindutva, in the electioneering in Delhi saying that there has been no “demand” for him from the grass root workers.

Senior Delhi BJP leaders, one of them VK Malhotra, had said that he would be used for the canvassing in Delhi before his release from Etah jail. He was jailed under National Security Act (NSA) following purportedly making a communal speech in a public meet in his parliamentary constituency Pilibhit.

“Varun Gandhi will not campaign in Delhi. He has not been invited,” a senior leader of Delhi BJP said.

The leader said that from any of the seven seats in Delhi, there has been no demand from the party workers for Varun.

It should be noted that after the alleged speech and consequent jail, Varun was being expected – by some BJP workers and political analysts – to join in the future the lobby of heavyweights like LK Advani and Narendra Modi, the BJP’s response to Congress’ Rahul.

Varun was released on April 16 from the Etah jail after Supreme Court ordered his release on parole for two weeks.

The BJP had said that Varun, party’s candidate from Pilibhit, would also campaign outside his constituency according to his “comfort level and demands of the individual candidates”.
