Varun Refuses to Meet Investigators

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Varun Gandhi on Sunday refused to meet the investigating officer who visited Etah jail to record his statement in connection with the cases lodged against him.

Varun Gandi faces serious charges including the National Security Act (NSA), which was invoked by the state government after trouble erupted in the aftermath of his anti-Muslim prpnpuncements at election meetings in Pilibhit.

“He (Varun Gandhi) said that he will only talk to officials in the presence of his lawyer,” the investigating officer, Bali Ram Rao is reported to have told correspondents.

Etah District Magistrate Gaurav Dayal, later, said: “As the cases against Varun are lodged in Pilibhit, the further course of action will be decided from there.”

The Uttar Pradesh government had last Sunday invoked the National Security Act against Varun, the BJP candidate from Pilibhit, for his alleged hate speeches and the mob violence that erupted during his arrest the previous day.

He was shifted from Pilibhit to Etah jail April 1 due to “security concerns” cited by the State government.
