US Ambassador Meets PM, Chidambaram

US Ambassador Timothy J Roemer on Friday met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and discussed the September 24-25 G-20 summit in Pittsburgh, US.

This was the first meeting between the top diplomat and Premier Singh since the former assumed charge last month.

The Prime Minister leaves for US on September 22 to participate in the summit, which will be attended by leaders from the world’s top 20 economies.

Earlier, Roemer met Home Minister P Chidambaram and reportedly reiterated the US demand that Pakistan take concrete steps against JuD chief Hafiz Saeed.

“I think swift, lengthy punishment for the six Mumbai suspects in Islamabad is important for the United States and it’s important for India,” said Roemer.

The meetings are significant as they came hours after the police in Pakistan’s Fisalabad registered two FIRs against Hafiz Saeed late on Thursday night.

Saeed has been charged with making anti-State speeches and inciting activists of his banned outfit to wage ‘holy war’.
