UP Govt Denies Violation of SC Directives on Memorials
Following the suo moto cognisance of media reports taken by the Supreme Court, the Uttar Pradesh government on Thursday filed an affidavit saying it had not violated the court orders or an earlier undertaking filed by it.
The Court on September 11 ordered the immediate halt of all further construction, repair and maintenance activities at the Kanshi Ram Memorial Sthal in Lucknow.
The apex Court also directed the state government to ensure that no person, barring the watch and wards staff, was allowed to be present in and around the sites.
The apex court had asked the state government to respond to reports of continuing construction in a Noida park without environmental clearance.
Opposition parties welcomed the Supreme Court directives ordering the halt of all construction related activities at the Kanshi Ram Memorial Sthal and called for appropriate action against the state government.
Petitioners charged the state government with misuse of public funds to install statues of Mayawati, Kanshi Ram, other Dalit leaders and those of elephants — the BSP election symbol — at parks in Lucknow and Noida.
