Two Militans, One Jawan Killed in Kashmir Fighting

At least three militants and an army jawan were killed in a military operation launched to foil an infiltration bid in Mendhar sector of Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir.

Defence officials said that after noticing movement of infiltrators near LoC in Sona Gali area of Mendhar sector, situated some 200 kms from Jammu, army challenged them at nearly 2300 hrs last night.

Subsequently, intruders opened fire at the army jawans who retaliated and in the resultant encounter, two militants were killed and an officer identified as Major Akash Singh was wounded who later succumbed to injuries.

Another militant was killed around 0700 hours today, they said, adding some weapons and a wireless set were recovered from the slain militants.

Search operations were still going on in the area when last reports came in.
