Three Soldiers Guilty of ‘Lapses’ in Sopore Firing

A junior commissioned officer (JCO) and two soldiers of the Indian Army have been found guilty of killing civilians in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir earlier this year, say media reports attributing the information to official sources in New Delhi.

A high-level Army court of inquiry headed by a Brigadier held the JCO and two soldiers of 22 Rashtriya Rifles, who were involved in the incident, accountable for “various lapses,” reported PTI.

Mohammad Amin Tantray and Javid Ahmad were killed and another youth Firdous Ahmed was injured when the troops of 22 Rashtriya Rifles opened fire, the incident sparked widespread protests in the valley, it added.

Following the protests the government ordered a magisterial probe into the matter.
