Telangana Issue; Shut Down On, TRS Gets Support, Pressure Mounts on Cong
Amid a two-day bandh affecting normal life in Andhra Pradesh over demand of separate Telangana issue, pressure seems to be mounting on the ruling Congress party on the demand as the winter session of state Assembly begins.
Significant political parties like TDB, Praja Rajyam and the CPI have declared their backing to the resolution for separate state as TRS activists carried on with violence on the streets during second day of the 48-hour shut down.
K Chandrashekahar Rao, TRS supremo, who led the movement for separate Telangana state got media attention back as he drudged up the fading issue going on fast-unto-death and resultantly landing in the hospital. Reports said that he is taking water only.
It should be noted that his party was defeated at the hustings in last Lok Sabha elections.
“If Chandrashekahar Rao continues his fast, there is bound to be more violence, hence he should give up the fast and I can talk to him on Telangana issue once he has regained strength,” said, K Rosiah, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister.
The shutdown called by the TRS in support of KCR’s fast-unto-death has put the normal life out of gear in Hyderabad.
Reports said that tension has been prevailing in and around the Nizam’s Institue of medical Sciences, where Rao has been admitted.
However, the TRS maintains that it cannot be held responsible for the ensuing violence.
Chandrashekahar Rao’s son T Rama Rao said, “Whatever happened after November 29 is not our responsibility. Government should take steps to maintain law and order.”
While most opposition parties including BJP and Chiranjeevi’s Prajarajyam have extended support to TRS’s call for Telangana, Congress says it is a decision that will need a deeper consensus.
