Telangana Issue: Centre Rules out President’s Rule; Assembly Adjourned Sine Die

Amid continued protest over Telangana, Central government has ruled out imposing President’s rule in Andhra Pradesh, while state assembly has to be adjourned sine dine following pandemonium in the House by MLAs.

Ruling out imposition of President’s rule, Centre said that it was ‘absolutely foolish’ to even think of it.

“It is absolutely foolish,” Union Law Minister and AICC in-charge of Andhra Pradesh M Veerappa Moily said.

He made the statement while answering a query whether the government was considering the imposition of Article 356 in the state due to the widespread disturbances after the Centre announced that a separate state of Telengana will be formed.

In response to another question if chief minister K Rosaiah has been asked to quit, Moily said, “There was no truth in that.”

The statement of the Law Minister comes in the backdrop of demands that President’s rule should be imposed in the state in the wake of the crisis in Andhra Pradesh over the issue.

Moily said, “We would like to address the concerns of the people. We want to take everybody on board”.

Maintaining that there was no need to be “panicky”, he said a “solution will be found”. The Law Minister parried a question on whether a separate state of Telengana would be formed.

“I have no answer to that,” he said.

In the meanwhile, state assembly was adjourned sine die following pandemonium soon after it met for day’s proceedings amid slogan shouting by MLAs in favour of unified Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, PTI reported.

In yet another fallout of the Telangana controversy, Congress MP from Vijayawada L Rajagopal was arrested at the airport here soon after he landed to launch an indefinite fast to oppose the proposed bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, police said.

His arrest sparked protests in the Andhra region, according to IANS.

Speaker N Kiran Kumar Reddy adjourned the House sine die after legislative affairs minister D Prasada Rao moved a motion Under Rule 16 of the Assembly Rules in that regard amidst pandemonium.

The Assembly was originally scheduled to hold the winter session till December 23.

However, with more than 130 MLAs of Andhra and Ralayasemma Region submitting their resignations and with the remaining members disrupting the proceedings, government chose to bring the sessions to an end.

The winter session which began on December 7 had not transacted any business in the five days it sat except for passing a condolence resolution in memory of late chief minister Y S Rajasekhar Reddy.

Prasada Rao said conducting proceedings in the House was not possible in a surcharged atmosphere and at a time when majority of MLAs have submitted their resignation.
