Stop Ragging to Keep Aid Coming: SC

Days after the University Grants Commission (UGC) said it could cut financial aid to educational institutions failing to prevent ragging, the Supreme Court on Monday threatened to cut aid to colleges failing to implement court directives to curb the menace.

Taking a serious view of the death of Aman Kachroo, a medical student from Himachal Pradesh who died in a related incident, a Bench headed by justice Arijit Pasayat said: “Time has come for cutting off financial aid to these institutions which are not complying with the directions.”

The Bench issued show-cause notices for initiating contempt proceedings against the Principal and Registrar of Rajendra Prasad Medical College, Kangra, where Kachroo was allegedly beaten to death by his college seniors.

The college authorities were directed to file replies within two weeks time.

Looking into the allegations of negligence against a doctor who treated Kachroo, the Bench directed the Medical Council of India to inquire into the matter.

The court also issued contempt notices to the Registrar and Principal of Bapatla Agriculture and Engineering College in Andhra Pradesh, where a girl student attempted suicide after being forced to dance naked by her seniors.
