Sri Lanka Prez Arrives Tomorrow
Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa begins a three-day visit to India on Tuesday, he is scheduled to meet his counterpart Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The visit comes amid growing concerns in Sri Lanka over the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with India.
Closer home, DMK patriarch and Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi has asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to discuss with him issues of rehabilitation of war-displaced Tamils and formulation of a permanent political settlement.
In a letter to Singh on Saturday, Karunanidhi said some 80,000 Tamils were still living in transit camps in the island nation awaiting rehabilitation by the Sri Lankan government. He reminded that the Rajapaksa government had promised to rehabilitate all Tamils by December 2009.
Indian and Lankan Tamils, who share close family and cultural ties, blame the Rajapaksa government of war crimes in its final war against the LTTE.
