Speaker Dismisses Opposition Demand of Adjournment Motion on Inflation

Dismissing opposition demand of putting off all other business to discuss inflation, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar said that the issue would be taken up after Railway budget, which led to uproar in the house and its subsequent adjournment, reported PTI.

According to report, a nearly 45-minute debate took place in the Lok Sabha on the admissibility of the adjournment motion, which requires voting and postponement of all other businesses.

MPs from BJP, RJD, Shiv Sena, Akali Dal and others pitched very hard for the motion, said report.

However, Speaker declined to accept their requests, report said.

“I have carefully examined the rules in the last two days and have also heard from the honourable members,” Meira Kumar was quoted as saying in her reply to the debate.

Kumar said that price rise was a ‘burning issue (but) has not risen in the manner of emergency’ to be discussed after adjourning the other businesses, said report.

“I am bound by the rules of the House. The issue will be discussed soon after the Railway budget,” she was quoted as saying.

This infuriated the opposition members and they began shouting slogans, forcing the Speaker to adjourn the House till noon, said report.
