Ahead of first expansion of the Cabinet, Congress President and United Progressive Alliance Chairperson Sonia Gandhi met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at 7 Race Course Road for discussion of portfolio allocation to ministers who were sworn-in on Friday but have not been given a ministry yet.
The first Cabinet expansion is to take place on Tuesday and some ministers of state along with ministers with independent charge will be inducted into the ministry.
After DMK’s decision to joint the government, M Karunanidhi’s son M K Azhagiri is reaching Delhi on Monday. Karunanidhi has nominated Azhagiri for the Chemicals and Fertiliser portfolio, A Raja for IT and nephew Dayanidhi Maran for the Textile Ministry.
In addition, DMK’s Rajya Sabha member and Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi might be made Minister of State Women and Child Development while T R Baalu might be made Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
It should be mentioned that Azhagiri is a first-time Lok Sabha MP from Madurai in Tamil Nadu.
According to sources, National Security Advisor MK Narayanan brought back DMK and Congress on negotiating table and pushed the deal through.
Names of some new entrants in the Lok Sabha like Mallikarjun Kharge (Karnataka) and Manicka Tagore (Tamil Nadu) are also being mentioned for induction in the ministry.
The probable names in Trinamool Congress include Dinesh Trivedi, Sudip Bandhopadhyay, Sultan Ahmed and Mukul Roy.
