Singh Conveys India’s Concerns on Moderate Taliban to Karzai

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has conveyed India’s concern to Afghan President Hamid Karzai over a plan to talk with the so-called moderate Taliban in Afghanistan, said media reports.

Singh called on Karzai at his 7, Race Course Road residence and held discussions with him over a number of issues affecting peace and stability in Afghanistan, reports said.

The meeting came about two months after seven Indians were brutally killed in Kabul.

During the meeting, the prime minister reiterated India’s commitment to carry on reconstruction work in Afghanistan and discussed the issue of the security of more than 3,500 Indians engaged in several projects in the violence-hit country, said reports.

Besides, Singh conveyed country’s concern over a January 28 London Conference plan which is meant to reintegrate the so-called moderate Taliban in the Afghan political mainstream.

Singh had conveyed similar concerns to US president Barack Obama a fortnight ago in talks with him in Washington.

Karzai arrived in New Delhi on a two-day visit in the morning. He will leave for Bhutanese capital Thimphu on Tuesday to participate in the 16th summit meeting of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).
