Shutdown in Kashmir against Death Sentence to Lajpat Nagar Bombers

In protest against a Delhi court verdict awarding death sentence to three persons for their involvement in the Lajpat Nagar bomb blast, the Hurriyat Conference on Friday called for a shutdown in Kashmir Valley, reported ANI.

Besides death sentence to three, two of whom are Kashmiris, one was sentenced to life imprisonment and one other got seven-year term.

Shut affected normal life in the valley, with all shops, business establishments, schools and colleges being shut down and traffic remaining off the roads, report said.

“Out of three people sentenced to death in connection with the 1996 Lajpat Nagar blast, two are Kashmiris. That is why the Hurriyat had given a shutdown call yesterday evening due to which today all shops are closed and traffic is not moving,” Maqbool Ahmad, a resident, was quoted as saying.

Keeping in view the shutdown, officials made elaborate security arrangements across the valley to avert any untoward incident, report said.

In the Lajpat Nagar blast in 1996, 13 people were killed and scores of others injured.

The accused were arrested soon after the incident by the police, which tracked the calls made by them to various media houses, claiming responsibility for the terror attack.
