Shopian Victims’ Bodies Exhumed, Buried

Forensic experts on Monday exhumed bodies of 22 year-old Nilofar Jan and 17 year-p;d sister-in-law Asiya Jan, who were allegedly raped and murdered in the south Kashmir town of Shopian earlier this year, said media reports citing officials.

The forensic team, which arrived from New Delhi on Sunday, conducted the exhumation under the watchful eye of security personnel, who had cordoned off the graveyard – where the two were buried.

The experts were accompanied by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team headed by a deputy inspector general, a local magistrate, district police chief, relatives of the victims and a few community elders.

The bodies were again buried in the graveyard after the forensic experts took samples.
The double rape and murder had resulted in a huge public outcry across Kashmir.

State government handed over investigations to the CBI earlier this month.

On Sunday, the case witnessed a startling twist with the gynaecologist, who had conducted autopsies on the bodies of the victims, confessing that she did not take the vaginal swabs from the victims.
