Shopian Case: Bandh against CBI Report in Srinagar, Life Goes on Unaffected

On second day of shutdown called against CBI report in Shopian case, life in Srinagar continued unaffected, showing city’s snub of separatists on the issue.

Blaming CBI report for adding insult to injury, the Majlis-e-Mashawarat has called for a general strike today, which is supported by all the separatists groups including both factions of Hurriyat Conference, JKLF, JKLF (R ), Democratic Freedom Party. All separatists had rejected the CBI report.

Nonetheless, people in Srinagar defied the call and shops and schools were kept open.

Following a clean chit to four police officials in the Shopian case by the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, separatists burnt the copies of CBI chargesheet outside the court and called for Kashmir Bandh on Tuesday. They also raised slogans against the investigation agency outside and police officials.

“We have called for Kashmir bandh tomorrow against the CBI report which is unacceptable. It tantamounts to adding insult to injury,” Majlis spokesman Mohammad Shafi Khan had said.

“The report is surprising because it absolved the culprits and instead framed charges against 13 innocent including doctors and lawyers,” he said.

Giving a clean chit to four police officials in the mysterious Shopian case, CBI said that two women who were alleged to have been raped and murdered had actually died due to drowning and has indicted 14 people including doctors and lawyers for allegedly fabricating evidence.
