SC Turns down Raju’s Bail Plea in Satyam Case

In Satyam mutli-crore fraud case, the Supreme Court has rejected the bail plea of company’s disgraced founder Ramalinga Raju, said media reports.

“When serious crimes are committed, people are bound to be in jail,” a three-member bench led by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan was quoted as observing.

In no mood to relent, the bench which also comprises of Justices Deepak Verma and B S Chauhan said that being the main accused Raju had the susceptibility to impact the witnesses and so his bail could not be granted, said report.

Dismissing the bail plea, the apex court also rejected Raju’s contention that he was entitled to bail as the CBI had already filed the third chargesheet in the case and that he was suffering from serious health ailments like cardiac problem and hepatitis, report said.

“He (Raju) is also getting proper medical treatment,” the bench noted.

Senior counsel S Andhiarjuna submitted that Raju was languishing in jail since January 2009 and that the trial court would be required to examine 671 witnesses and peruse 1.60 lakh documents, further extending his stay in prison, said report.

Besides, the contented that many other accused including some senior auditors have been given bail and so Raju was entitled to the same principle of parity, report said.
