SC Restrains UP Govt from Construction at Noida Park

In a blow to BSP chief Mayawati, the Supreme Court has restrained the UP government from continuing building and construction works at a park in Noida adjacent to the national capital in which statues and memorials of Dalit icons, including Chief Minister Mayawati, are being erected.

A bench headed by CJI KG Balakrishanan and comprising Justices S H Kapadia and Aftab Alam, while hearing the matter, passed its order and posted the hearing to October 26. The apex court, in its order, however,  allowed the Noida authorities to continue with other works of the multicrore projects.

The latest blow from the Supreme Court comes days after it initiated contempt proceedings against the UP government and slammed it for playing politics over the construction of memorials.

The apex court also asked UP Chief Secretary Atul Kumar Gupta to depose in person before it on November 04 and explain the UP government’s stand.

The apex court is completely dissatisfied over the UP government’s explanation regarding the construction of various Ambedakar memorials across the state and had castigated it for violating its previous orders.

Special Forest Bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justices S H Kapadia and Aftab Alam posted the matter for further hearing on October 26.
