SC Reserves Decision on Dutt Plea

The Supreme Court on Monday reserved its order on Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt’s plea seeking suspension of conviction in Mumbai blasts case.

Dutt, a Samajwadi Party candidate from Lucknow, must earn the suspension of his sentence to contest the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Dutt had moved the Supreme Court on March 5.

After hearing the arguments for over two hours a bench of Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan, Justice P Sathasivam and Justice RM Lodha reserved the verdict.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) counsel Additional Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium and several other senior lawyers opposed Dutt’s plea.

The apex court is likely to announce its verdict in a day or two.

Under the Representation of the People Act, anyone sentenced to more than two years imprisonment is barred from contesting elections till a court of law stays the conviction and sentence.

On July 31, 2007, Sanjay Dutt was sentenced to a jail term of six years for illegal possession of firearms acquired from acquaintances  involved in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts.

Though, Dutt’s name was “cleared of terrorism conspiracy charges in the blasts,” his conviction still stands and he has been out on bail since November 27, 2007.
