SC Extend Varun’s Parol till May 14

In hate speech case, the Supreme Court has extended the parole of Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Lok Sabha candidate Varun Gandhi till May 14, the day after balloting concludes in the five-phase general elections.

Hearing an appeal filed by BJP’s candidate in Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh which challenged the invocation of the National Security Act (NSA) on him, a bench of Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan and Justices P Sathasivam and JM Panchal extended the parole by May 14.

It should be mentioned that Varun was charged under NSA by the Uttar Pradesh government and arrested on March 28 for reportedly making communally-charged speech. Earlier, the Supreme Court had released him on two weeks parole till May 1 after he gave an undertaking that he would not deliver hate speeches.
