SC Dismisses All 22 Cases against Actress Khushboo for Pre-marital Sex Remarks

The Supreme Court has quashed all 22 cases moved against Tamil actress Khushboo in various parts of Tamil Nadu for her comments about pre-marital sex made in interview to various magazines in 2005, said media reports.

A bench comprising Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan and Justices Deepak Verma and BS Chauhan allowed the appeal filed by the actress against the decision of the Madras High Court which had dismissed her plea to quash the cases, reports said.

The Madras High Court had ordered that the different cases against her be consolidated and dealt with in a joint trial.

Talking to a TV channel, the actress said: “When you look around, every celebrity is pinned down for no rhyme or reason…and that is quite a harassment. I knew what I had spoken…it’s not an easy task for a woman to stand alone and say ‘I believe in what I have spoken’.”

She said that her original interview to a magazine was misquoted in a Tamil newspaper, and this incorrect report provoked the different cases against her, said reports.

Khushboo said that her remarks about pre-marital sex and living together were made as part of a discussion on AIDS and HIV, reports said.

“A woman and actor combined together made a statement that made sense…and that was the problem, I think,” she was quoted as saying.
