Sangli, Miraj Curfew Extended

Curfew in violence-hit Sangli and Miraj was on Friday extended from 1900 hours today to 0600 hours on Saturday, say media agencies attributing the inputs to District Collector Shyam Vardhane.

No untoward incident was reported from either of the two cities during the relaxation in the curfew today.

Sangli police have arrested one Imran Hassan Nadafh (30), for allegedly masterminding the communal riots, the Miraj resident has confessed to his role in the riots, reported PTI.

Trouble in Miraj started on September 3, when the Muslim community took exception to the erection of an ‘Anant Chaturdashi’ welcome arch, portraying killing of Mughal warrior Afzal Khan at the hands of Maratha king Shivaji.

Violence later spread to other parts of Sangli and neighbouring Kolhapur district, leading to imposition of curfew.
