RS Polls: First Results Come in; Paswan, Rudy Win

The first results in the Rajya Sabha elections to 18 seats across five states have come out, with winners including Lok Janshakti Party chief Ram Vilas Paswan, BJP spokesman Rajiv Pratap Rudy, RJD leader Ram Kripal Yadav and Janata Dal candidate RP Singh, said media reports.

However, the results will officially be announced only in the evening.

A former Union Minister, Paswan has been out in the cold ever since he lost the Lok Sabha elections in 2009.

According to reports, there was cross-voting in Bihar, with two BSP MLAs voting for the RJD and one BSP MLA voting for the JD(U).

Now all eyes are set on the four seats in Rajasthan, where the Congress and the BJP have accused each other of horse-trading.

Elections are also being held to four seats in Karnataka, three in Orissa and two in Jharkhand.

As many as 49 seats were to be vacated in the Rajya Sabha, but 21 candidates of various parties have already been elected unopposed.

Some of the other big names who are in the fray today include Ram Jethmalani, fielded by the BJP in Rajasthan, Vijay Mallya, who is contesting as an Independent in Karnataka, former BJP President M Venkaiah Naidu in Karnataka, Oscar Fernandes of the Congress in Karnataka, and  Commerce Minister Anand Sharma of the Congress in Rajasthan.
