Pvt Sec Should Cooperate to Change Public Behaviour, Autos Be Phased out: Sheila

Ahead of Commonwealth Games, Delhi chief minister Shiela Dikshit has asked private sector to participate and help government to bring about a change in public behaviour pattern, and suggested phasing out of auto-rickshaws, said media reports.

“I can see a lot of changes in mannerism, but it is not enough. If the private sector becomes an active partner, we can bring out a package on how to change behaviour of the citizens,” she was quoted as saying at the Delhi Tourism Conclave in New Delhi.

“When we go to France, US or Australia, we remember the mannerism of people there… (Similarly) Delhi should be a truly civilised city…The culture of politeness, sharing and caring for each other… how we address our guests and how we look after the public transport..,” Dikshit was quoted as saying.

Asking private sector to collaborate in bringing about transformation by measures like issuing ads, organizing meeting and training at school level and so on, she was quoted as saying, “You are welcome to be partners (in the campaign) as many of you have joined in the green projects.”
“People listens to appeals and initiates of the private sector. The govt is already doing its part but people often dismiss it as ‘Woh to sarkari baat hai’ (it is government’s work),” Dikshit was quoted as saying.

She noted that Delhi has rich heritage and history and the games provide a ‘great opportunity for us to do it together (so that) the city can be called a dream city’, said reports.

“It is not enough for government to announce projects. Unless the citizens actually participate both in decision-making and implementation, we have done only quarter of the job,” she was quoted as saying.

Dikshit also said that auto rickshaws should be phased out off roads of national capital territory as the citizens deserved better modes of transportation, reports said.

She said that nearly half of over 1 lakh autos plying in Delhi were illegal and highlighted burgeoning misbehavior by auto drivers, said reports.

The chief minister said that auto drivers, who are very unruly and harsh while driving, often harass passengers, reports said.

She also raised the issue of pollution caused by these autos, saying that a more eco-friendly alternative was required.

“Auto-rickshaws are not a good option. They are uncomfortable and pollute environment. Auto-rickshaw drivers are unruly and harass passengers,” she was quoted as saying.
