Protest in Srinagar against Boy’s Death in Clashes with Police

In protest against death of a 16-year-old boy in clashes with the police, a shutdown was observed in several areas in Srinagar on Monday, even though an assistance sub-inspector was suspended by authorities for acting in a ‘negligent and careless’ manner, reported PTI.

According to report, shops in many areas remained closed and residents took to streets to protest the killing of Wamik Farooq, pelting stones at policemen deployed in the area where tension continues to prevail after Sunday’s skirmishes.

For last two years, there have been violent clashes between the youth and police in the city, particularly on Fridays and Sundays, said report.

In the meanwhile, police suspended the assistant sub-inspector who lobbed a tear gas shell which had hit the boy on his head. The boy had later succumbed to injury in hospital, said report.

A police spokesman said that a probe had been ordered into the incident and further action was being initiated, said report.

As a precautionary measure, police and paramilitary forces were deployed in the old city, said report.

Report said citing sources that separatist leader Shabir Ahmad Shah, who planned to attend the funeral of the boy, was also put under house arrest as a precautionary measure.

Police and paramilitary forces have been deployed outside his house, said report.
