Prime Minister says, UPA committed to enact food security bill

New Delhi: The UPA government is committed to enacting the food security bill after considering all opinions, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Wednesday.

Food Minister KV Thomas on Tuesday had moved the food security bill, saying it was a key UPA legislation that would give the right to subsidized grain to around 67 percent of the population.

Both houses have seen repeated disruptions by opposition parties over the allocation of coal blocks and 2G spectrum. On Wednesday, parliament was adjourned sine die. The BJP had said it would not let parliament function till Manmohan Singh resigns over the alleged involvement of his office in the irregularities in the allocation of coal blocks and 2G spectrums. They also demanded that Law Minister PK Bansal and Law Minister Ashwani Kumar quit too.

While Bansal’s nephew was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for allegedly taking a bribe for the appointment of a member of the Railway Board, Ashwani Kumar has come under attack in the Supreme Court for vetting the CBI report on coal allocation.
