PM did not sleep well at night after the 26/11

New Delhi, May 21 (IBNS): In the summer of 2009 Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had said that “he did not sleep well at night” knowing the threat of terror attacks from Pakistan even after the 26/11 Mumbai incident was far from over, said secret U.S. diplomatic cables leaked by WikiLeaks.

In one of the worst terrorist attacks on India, Pakistani-trained gunmen laid siege on Mumbai on November 26, 2008, killing over 160 people, including foreigners, in attacks on a railway station, luxury hotels and a Jewish centre, among other targets.

Speaking to U.S. Under Secretary William Burns, the just re-elected Singh, had said that knowing that intelligence information “demonstrated that the threat of terror attacks after Mumbai was far from over,” deeply troubled him.

The cable sent from New Delhi to Washington about Singh’s meeting with Burns on June 11, 2009, leaked by the whistleblowing website, also quotes the Indian Prime Minister saying that he was committed to meeting Pakistan “more than halfway” and “not afraid if talks”.

Singh had said, But India needed assurance that Pakistan would do more to prevent itself to be used as a base for terror directed against its neighbor.

Charge d’affaires Peter Burleigh in the cable said, “He cautioned if he as Prime Minister was talking peace while Pakistani territory was being used to plan and conduct terror attacks against India, then ‘he would look ridiculous’ in front of the Indian people.”
