PM Cancels Assam Election Rally
Following reports of inclement weather and a mild hailstorm hitting the region, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday cancelled an election rally he was scheduled to address in the tea producing region of Dibrugarh in the northeastern state of Assam.
Premier Singh, according to reports, had to wait at the airport for the weather clearing up. However, but later abandoned plans as the Special Protection Group (SPG), responsible for guarding the leader, did not think it safe for him to proceed to the rally venue by helicopter.
The leader arrived at the Mohanbari airport around 1230 hours. But later returned to New Delhi. The Congress is now said to be in consultations to finalise a fresh schedule for the election rally.
Separatist ULFA militants had struck at four places in the state barely 24 hours ahead of the Prime Minister’s proposed meeting, at least 10 people were killed in the three bombings and a grenade attack that rocked Assam on Monday.
