PM Backs Pachauri

After controversies surrounded the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) chief Dr Rajendra Pachauri, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has come in support of the Nobel-prize winning scientist, reported NDTV.

The environmental body headed by him has been in the eye of a storm for its predictions on Indian glaciers, leading Pachauri to apologise and withdraw the IPCC’s forecast that Himalayan glaciers will melt away by 2035.

In January, the international body on Climate Change had confessed that its conclusion regarding melting of Himalayan glaciers by 2035 was grounded on ‘poorly substantiated’ estimates while the scientist blamed for the goof-up pointed the finger at the expert who included the year in the UN report.
