PM Asks Rich Countries to Reduce Gas Emissions within Tolerable Levels

Ahead of the Copenhagen summit, India has asked developed countries to make “serious” efforts to slash down emission of their greenhouse gas to tolerable levels and said that developing nations “cannot and will not” compromise on development.

While inaugurating a High Level Conference on Climate Change in New Delhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that if developed countries make a serious effort to bring their per capita emissions within tolerable levels, they will unleash large resources directed towards research.

Singh made it clear that Indian has not changed or shifted its position on climate change negotiations and that developing countries “cannot and will not” compromise on development.

“We stand committed that our per capita carbon emissions will never exceed the average of the per capita carbon emissions of developed countries,” he told the conference in the presence of Maldives President Mohammad Nasheed.
