PM Asks Not to Panic on Drought Situation, Godowns full of Grains

Allaying fears about of the aftermath of a scarce monsoon, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said that there is no need to panic on the drought situation in the country, for we have a better understanding of how to tackle a crisis and also there is adequate stock of wheat and rice in our godowns.

Sing said that schemes run by central government such as NREGA and Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana will help affected people.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said that Group of Ministers will meet on a regular basis and that the ground reality was that the drought has set in.

It may be mentioned that the statement of prime minister has come following chief ministers of drought affected states approached Singh for financial assistant to help farmers in their states.

Meanwhile, Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar was quoted as saying by a TV channel that the rainfall situation in India’s rice belt is worrisome. He also said that nearly half of India’s districts, 207 out of the 533 districts, are drought hit or is facing drought-like situation.
