PM Announces Relief Package of Rs 1,000 Cr to Karnataka
Following undertaking an aerial survey of flood-affected Karnataka, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has announced an assistance of Rs 1,000 for relief works.
The announcement came in a press conference in Raichur after Singh flew over the rain battered villages along with Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa.
In addition, Singh reviewed relief measures initiated by the state government at a meeting attended among others by Yeddyurappa, Union Ministers S M Krishna, M Veerappa Moily and M Mallikarjun Kharge and state Rural Development Minister Shobha Karandlaje.
Besides the funds for relief, an ex-gratia of Rs 1 lakh each to the families of victims of the unprecedented floods was also announced.
The floods left at least 226 people dead and caused large scale devastation.
Singh said that a Central team would soon be deputed for an on-the-spot assessment of the extent of damage.
