PETA Seeks Beef-Free C’wealth Games

People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has requested the Commonwealth Games Organising committee to refrain from serving beef and other non-vegetarian items to athletes and officials participating in the biggest sporting extravaganza in the country since the 1982 Asian Games.

In a letter to committee chairman, Suresh Kalmadi, PETA said the move would be in-keeping with the country’s culture.

“Refraining from serving beef would be respectful to the millions of people who revere cows…serving only vegetarian food would show respect for people of all faiths and would demonstrate respect for all animals and public health,” said the letter.

The Games are scheduled for October and this PETA campaign is almost sure to elicit strong support from right-wing organizations.
