Pending Cases Diminish Judicial System’s Strengths: PM

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Saturday said the backlog of cases awaiting justice diminishes the strengths of the country’s judicial system and asked states to initiate immediate action for the establishment of rural courts, delivering justice at doorstep in villages.

“We have a free press, a truly independent judiciary and independent institutions like the Election Commission and the Comptroller and Auditor General which underpin our democratic framework…. However, all these strengths are somewhat diminished by arrears and backlog of cases at every level of our judicial system,” he said.

The Prime Minister was addressing a national convention on “Law, Justice and The Common Man” organised by the AICC legal and human rights department.
As per estimates, some 3 crore cases are pending in various courts across the country.

Underlining the passage of the Gram Nyayalaya Act by his government, Singh said the full implementation of the Act will establish over 5,000 courts to bring justice to the doorstep of the common man.

Echoing similar concerns, Congress president Sonia Gandhi said legislations such as the Gram Nyayalaya Act would revolutionise the handling and disposal of cases in an efficient manner.
